“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” –Maya Angelou
“You can’t make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen.” –Michelle Obama
When was the last time you made a change to your life based on what you truly wanted or believed in? Most of us make decisions each day based on the circumstances of where we are at that moment or because we are afraid of what might happen, rather than what is. We are living in turbulent times with so much changing at such a rapid pace that looking to what our future can be is almost mind boggling.
So I ask, who are you being today? Are you living the gift of your life? Your purpose? As you ponder these questions, let me tell you a story.
A little girl wanted to see the world outside of her small apartment. She would ride her bike in front of the building where she lived every day. She would stop and talk to the people as they passed by. But, she really wanted to know who lived in the big house on the hill next door. One day she decided that she was going to find out. She rode her bike next door but she couldn’t just go up and knock on the door because when she looked up there was this insurmountable staircase. Her bike was too heavy and she couldn’t just leave it there. Every day she rode back to that staircase thinking, how am I going to get up there? One day there was a group of teenage boys sitting on the staircase. They thought it was cute that this little girl wanted to go somewhere, especially, when she didn’t even know who lived in the house. “Please, carry my bike up the stairs to the door?” the little girl asked. They laughed at her and she left feeling the sting of their laughter. Finally, one day, one of the boys carried her bike up the stairs. With absolute joy the little girl ran up the stairs following the boy and rang the doorbell.
To her surprise, a family with a child her age lived there. They invited her in to meet the family. The little boy was so shy that he never came out to play. He had a backyard and a dog. His father was a cook and he just loved to share the food that he made. For many years this little girl and her new friend and their families enjoyed a friendship that might never have happened.
I tell you this story because, it truly is simple. There was a dream. There was a decision. There was a circumstance that seemed to be in the way of that dream. There was persistence. There was an outcome. These are the game changers in our lives. Dream big, make a decision, keep going even when the circumstances seem insurmountable and be persistent. Your prosperity is just around the corner. Here’s to your game changers.
